Ghazal Collective is a fusion of heritage and innovation, where the art of storytelling finds its way into sustainable fashion. The name, "ghazal"—a poetic form renowned for its evocative expression and intricate beauty—reflects a dedication to crafting garments that transcend mere clothing. Each piece is a verse in a larger narrative, woven from recycled South Asian fabrics and imbued with a respect for tradition and the environment.
Behind the Poem
Growing up as a Pakistani-American in Southern California, Naila Johri often felt the tension between her deep cultural roots and the world around her. In a place where South Asian influences were rare, she longed for clothing that could reflect her heritage while fitting into her everyday life. When she couldn’t find garments that captured this balance, Naila took matters into her own hands, embracing the idea: "If I can’t find the piece, I’ll sew it myself."
This realization led to the creation of Ghazal Collective, a space where tradition meets innovation. Naila’s passion for cultural preservation is deeply rooted in her upbringing, where her parents preserved traditional Pakistani elements while living in the West. As an environmental studies student, she is committed to working toward sustainability, integrating these principles into her designs. By combining the rich, handcrafted textiles of South Asia with a contemporary aesthetic, Naila creates garments that are more than just fashion—they are expressions of identity and artistry for many.
Through Ghazal, Naila honors her Pakistani roots while offering a fresh perspective on cultural expression. Each piece is a story, a reflection of her family’s ability to infuse tradition with modernity, and a step toward a more sustainable future.

We ensure sustainability by sourcing fabrics from markets in Pakistan, supporting local artisans and their businesses afar. We consciously avoid industrialization by using classic machinery and ensuring that every step of garment production is handled by skilled human hands. This approach reduces waste and minimizes environmental impact while honoring traditional craftsmanship. By blending heritage techniques with eco-friendly practices, we create high-quality garments that reflect our commitment to cultural and environmental preservation.
